I know this is a total shocker to you guys, but I have a pretty huge backlog of recipes and crafts to post here as I find the time. I was scanning through my photos, trying to figure out what to post today, and realized I had yet to share with you one of my delicious triumphs: savory french toast.
One day, I came home from work with a very specific craving. I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted. I only knew that it had to include eggs in some way -- but not whole or scrambled -- had to have carbs, and just needed to be savory. Obviously eggs + carbs immediately made me think of french toast, but french toast is usually sickly-sweet to me. I despaired of solving my craving dilemma momentarily before it occurred to me that there was no law against making savory french toast. Fortified by this thought, I went about developing a recipe.
Ingredients
2 slices bread
For egg wash
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon ginger (I used that pre-chopped yummy mush)
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
For dressing
2 tablespoons bottled peanut sauce
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 teaspoon soy sauce
Steps
1. Preheat griddle over medium (assuming gas stove)
2. Crack that egg into a shallow bowl. Toss in other egg wash ingredients, mix up
3. Dunk your bread into the egg wash. Make sure you get both slices nice and soggy and use up all of the egg wash
4. Cook until golden brown on each side
5. Mix up dressing, serve over hot french toast
The hubacious and I each had one slice for about 188 calories each. This isn't the best french toast I've ever had, but it has a lot of promise, which isn't a bad result given that this was my first try. I would definitely make a similar recipe it again, but I might throw in a few more flavors and spice it up a bit -- literally. I'd go for a bolder curry flavor next time, use some fresh basil, and mix in coconut milk to both the wash and the dressing. But, all in all, Asian-inspired savory french toast is a thing, and a pretty tasty thing at that!
